Analysis of a student video

I am going to analyse a music video made by a past student in my school, to see if our music video is on the same stardard. This music video is called 'When You're Gone'

I like the following about this video

I like the ambient sound of the background in the beginning scene from 0:03 to 0:14 we can hear birds chirping & the sound of wind blowing around as she is meant to be in the woods.
I like the idea that she is playing the piano in the beginning also.
I really like that there is performance shots as well as narrative shots. And the narrative shots look really realistic and it makes you feel familiar with the actors.
I like the costume changes and the clothes that she uses in the different scenes, they match up well with the scenes and the different shots and scenes made the video interesting, I didn’t find it repetitive or boring.
I like how she is lip-syncing with so much energy and it looks like she is actually the singer and it looks like a very professional music video and how she put effort in her acting.
I really like how the narrative is in black and white and the performance is in colour. I was going to do this in my music video but we decided not to.
I like the transitions that she used when the boy was disappearing when she was missing him, it looked really professional
I like how the video ends with the quick paced shots from 3:59 to 4:04 her editing was superb.

I do not like the following about the video

I think that there should have been more mise-en-sene present, I think there should have been more make up on her at the last performance scene when she was wearing the long glittery dress from 3:14 to 3:58 the dress was really pretty but she could have complemented it with nicer hair and make up.

Overall I am really impressed with the music video and I think it was a great video to compare mine to as I have used some of the things she has used like
Both using performance and narrative shots
Use of transitions and fades
Costume changes
This was a good music video to compare mine to as the theme is very similar to mine, mainly two characters in the video, boy and girl and it revolves around their lives and it shows aspect of romance, teenage love, loneliness, isolation and we feel pity for the girl as she is alone as we feel pity for the boy in my music video as he is also feeling isolated and lonely

Ancillary Tasks

Why that design?
I used the colours black and white on my magazine advert digipak because it looked better, it suited properly with the theme.
Ashley is alone because it associates well with the lyrics of the song, it is a sad love song and it relates well with loneliness and isolation. It supports the metaphor 'there's no colour in his life', literally.

Why that font?
I used that font because it stands out well against the picture on the magazine advert. I made the colour of the font white as it goes very well with the colour scheme. We used darkish dull colours so that it can go well with the theme of the song, which is loneliness and an empty heart, as if we used bright colours it would suggest that our song was about happiness and joy.

Why that composition?
Ashley is standing in the middle of the magazine advert to show that he is the main centre of attention - a convention of RnB. We can clearly see his facial expression and body language, he is alone and his face is neutral, he is not smiling while his hands are in his pockets because there is no one to hold his hand, etc. Again this suggests loneliness which the song lyrics are about.

Why that record label?,
On our magazine advert, the record label we used is JIVE and we used JIVE because it is originally Chris Browns record label, they are a very successful and popular label.
We thought it would be suitable to use them as they are known for producing very successful hip-hop and RnB artists. We made the advert full-page size as Jive are a major record label who could afford to do this easily.

Why that release date?
We put 'OUT NOW" on the bottom of our magazine advert to make our poster seem exciting and to promote our video. We made the font very large so that it stands out and our audience can be excited. the text 'OUT NOW' will hype up the album.

Why that image?
On our magazine advert, we used Ashley alone to support the fact that he is lonely as our song's theme is loneliness. He is not looking at the camera, he is looking at the floor and this suggests depression and sadness.
On the inside, the two pictures we used relate very well with the theme of the song, the leaves suggest the gloomy autumn season and the coldness and the coldness relates to the way Ashley feels.
The other picture is of Ashley sitting down on the bench, here again, he is lonesome and abandoned and fits in better with the song lyrics and the mood of the song.
The back of the album is of a tree, again this suggests emptiness and he seems like an outcast. The picture is a snapshot from the music video so we have made it relate to eachother

DIGIPAK FINSHED

My partner and I decided to use black and white as the colour scheme of our digipak as black and white can be associated with a dull feeling which is what out actor in our music video was meant to be feeling.
We made sure that our poster and cd cover (inside, outside, left & right) were all black and white so that it can be easily associated with one and other. This also shows brand identity, overall we were very happy with the end outcome of our digipak and we concluded that it associates well with the theme of the song which is lonliness, isolation and regret, and the fact that he is alone walking alone adds to the feel of the theme of the song. If the digipak was with the actor holding balloons or dancing or looking happy it will not be associated with the song in the way that it should. that will give it a humourous feel which is not what we were aiming for.
His body language, which is hands in his pocket, looking down also was a great image for the song as he looks rather upset and angry which are moods that we often feel when going through what he is going through in the song and video.

Editing Our Digipak

To edit our digipak, we used adobe photoshop.
Adobe Photoshop is a graphics editing programme developed and published by adobe systems Incorporated.
adobe photoshop was useful to use as it was very accessable and i could edit my pictures in different ways, i could change the size, the colour, etc.
I used photoshop to edit all my photos and it was very efficient.
there was different tools that i found useful such as the crop tool, erase tool, etc.

Digipak pictures

This would have been a good photo to use but i do not like the fact that there is a rubbish bin in the back ground, I feel like it kind of ruins the photo. apart from that, Ashley's pose is great and his body language is good.

Brand Identity

Brand identity is the visible element of a brand (such as colours, designs  logotype, name, symbol) that together identify and distinguish the brand in the consumer' mind.
The outward expression of a brand - including its name, trademark, communications, and visual appearance - is brand identity.Because the identity is assembled by the brand owner, it reflects how the owner wants the consumer to perceive the brand.  Furthermore, the brand name should be on target with the brand demographic.
Brand identity is what the owner wants to communicate to its potential consumers.
Brand identity needs to focus on authentic qualities - real characteristics of the value and brand promise being provided and sustained by organizational and/or production characteristics
we made sure there was brand identity with our products which were; magazine advert, cd cover: inside, outside and front and our music video) so that they all looked like they related and so they werent far from eachother and thier look wouldnt vary too much.

Digipak

FRONT COVER
I would like the font on the front cover to be bold like Beyonce's album, 4. The digipak is going to be in black and white and i would like Ashley to pose on the front, not looking at the camera. like Mike Posner's 'Cooler than me'
SPLINE
The spline will be basic with just his name and the name of the track.

Conventions of your genre digipak
RnB
Fashion
Mainly the artist- centre of attention
Jewellery
Tattoos
Slow R&B songs these days are usually in greyscale or a sepia tone. I think this is because it makes the colours very soft which adds to the tone of the song because dark colours evoke emotion.
However slow R&B songs that are about being in love or breaking up, does not have as much nudity as sexual R&B music

Digipak covers from our genre: RnB

I like this album cover because it is simple and at the same time it is very nice. i like the the fact that Chris Brown is the only one on thr cover, giving him all the attention. i like the font and how it is by his picture, making it clear that it is his name. i also like the style of the font and the size of it. i like how the background is faded. i also like him looking to the side and not directly at the camera. i like his props and his outfit, the jewellry and the hat with the logo.

I really like this album cover. the first thing i like about the cover is the colour, i like the black and white theme with the use of shadows in the picture and i also really like his body language, the fact that he is looking downwards and has his hand on his head shows that there is something up with him, almost like he is thinking.
I also like the font as it is unique and i like where it is placed on the picture.

This is another album cover that i really like. Enrique Iglesias looks very attactive, his pose is what makes the cover very nice, i really like the colour. it looks good in black and white. His name is boldly written and then underneath, much smaller is the name of the album. both are very important.

I really like all of these covers and i have come to the conclusion that i would like our cover to be in black and white, with just Ashley on the cover, no props or a busy background.
I like the second cover the best and that is what i would like Ashley to be posing like, with his face looking in a different direction and similar body language.
I will also like the name of Artist and cover to be boldly written.
